Cyclone "Shaheen" Approaches Muscat amid Heavy Rain, Unprecedented Winds

The Omani News Agency reported on Sunday that heavy rain fell in the Governorate of Muscat due to cyclone "Shaheen", while the Omani Emergency Situations Management Center reported that the wind speed reached 135 km per hour, and that the wind speed associated with the cyclone is unprecedented.

The Omani Civil Defense, on its part, stated that several reports of people trapped by rain in their vehicles in Muscat, and that dozens of people were rescued during the operation; the authorities announced Sunday and Monday an official leave for both businesses and schools.

The cyclone also cut off major roads due to heavy rain and the accompanying strong winds, and video clips, circulated on social media, showed torrential torrents that swept the roads in Muttrah.

The Omani Civil Aviation Authority issued a fourth warning about the tropical crises, stating that satellite images showed the movement of "Shaheen" towards the coasts of the sultanate overlooking the Sea of ​​Oman, noting that the center of hurricane is 80 km away from Muscat, with a wind speed estimated at 135 km per hour.

On Sunday, the Civil Aviation Authority in Oman issued warning No. 3 about Shaheen in the Arabian Sea, according to the Oman News Agency.

The authority said in a statement, that the latest satellite images and analyzes of the National Center for Early Warning of Multiple Hazards showed that Shaheen is currently centered at 24.2 degrees north latitude and 59.3 degrees east longitude, and continues its movement towards the coast of the Sultanate overlooking the Sea of ​​Oman.

It also added that the center of the cyclone is about 130 km from the Governorate of Muscat, and the wind speed around the center is estimated at 64 knots (116 km/h).

The authority also indicated that the cyclone is likely to continue its movement towards the coasts of the North Al Batinah Governorate, provided that the direct effects begin on Sunday morning and be accompanied by high-speed winds (40 to 60 knots) and very heavy thunderstorms (200 to 500 mm) leading to flooding of valleys of the governorates of North and South Al Batinah, Muscat, Al Dhahirah, Al Buraimi, Al Dakhiliyah and the coastal areas of South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.
