Cuba started vaccinating its residents with the new local COVID-19 vaccine, Abdala, for people who aged over 19 years old, media agencies reported on Friday.

Early this month, announced that its local COVID-19 vaccine “Abdala” is effective by 100 % after concluding the third phase of clinical trials.

The Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Director Marta Ayala described the results of the clinical trials as excellent. She added that 300,000 participants will take place in the upcoming trials.

In the same context, Cuba approved the vaccine for emergency usage last month.

Last June, Miguel Canel, the President of Cuba, hailed on his Twitter account the latest vaccine progress reached by the state.

He tweeted that despite the hard status the country passes through nowadays, the Cuban scientists managed to make an honorable achievement presented in several local COVID-19 vaccines, one of them known as Abdala.

The three-shot vaccine is capable of competing with other forms of vaccines in the global market such as AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, and Pfizer.
