Court Fines 2 Journalists, Univ. Prof. EGP 6, 000 for Defaming Hawass

On Tuesday, the 6th of October Misdemeanor Court handed out a fine of EGP 6,000 against two journalists and a professor at the Faculty of Archaeology, in addition to a temporary civil compensation of EGP 10,000 each.

The two journalists, Magdy Shendi, Hani Riad, and the university professor, Abdel Fattah Al-Banna face charges of insulting and defaming Dr. Zahi Hawass, the prominent Egyptologist and former Minister of Antiquities.

Dr. Mahmoud Kubaish, the former dean of the Faculty of Law at Cairo University, had filed a lawsuit No. 3870 against the two journalists and the professor at the Faculty of Archeology, accusing them of insulting and defaming Dr. Hawass.

The Court of October 6th issued a ruling fining the defendants 6,000 pounds and a temporary civil compensation of 10,000 pounds for the offense of insulting and slandering Hawass.
