Irish actor Cillian Murphy is attached to star in the title role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming historical movie “Oppenheimer”.

The “Peaky Blinders” star will play J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American physicist whose role running the Los Alamos Laboratory and involvement in the Manhattan Project has led him to be dubbed the “father of the atomic bomb”.

Murphy and Nolan previously worked together on “Batman Begins”, “Inception”, and “Dunkirk”.

Universal Pictures will produce the $100 million movie, after winning the rights in a feverish bidding war with the likes of Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros.

Warner Bros had released nearly every Nolan movie but their relationship grew strained after the filmmaker criticized the studio's decision to release its entire 2021 slate simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max as a concession to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Oppenheimer”, like previous Nolan movies such as “Dunkirk” and “The Dark Knight”, will be filmed with IMAX cameras.

Universal Pictures is also set to distribute “Oppenheimer” theatrically worldwide as well as release it in the North American theaters on July 21, 2023.

The movie is penned by Nolan and co-produced alongside Emma Thomas and Charles Roven of Atlas Entertainment.

“Oppenheimer” is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

Production will begin in early 2022.
