China announced a series of new military and political measures in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan this week.
In an escalating step, Beijing suspended cooperation with Washington on a number of common files, including military dialogue, imposed sanctions on Pelosi, and expanded its military exercises in the vicinity of Taiwan.
China besieged Taiwan with massive military maneuvers that started Thursday and will continue until Sunday. China’s response was condemned by the United States and Asian and Western allies.
During the maneuvers, ballistic missiles were launched, and fighter planes and warships were deployed around Taiwan.
The Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted the Taiwanese prime minister as denouncing the “malicious neighbor’s display of power on the island’s doorstep.
On its part, the Taiwan Ministry of Defense confirmed that 68 Chinese combat aircraft and 13 warships crossed the “middle line” located along the Taiwan Strait during Friday’s exercises.
