Chinese vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang has summoned U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad to lodge a strong protest against passing Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act for 2019 by the US Senate and House of Representatives.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Zeguang assured the U.S. ambassador that the United States should correct what he called its "mistakes" immediately, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs or interfering in China's internal affairs.

Zeguang pointed out that Hong Kong is a part of Chinese territory, while Hong Kong's affairs are a part of China's internal affairs.

“The United States publicly interferes in China's internal affairs, and ignores the facts, It seriously violates international law and the basic principles of international relations, so China expresses resentment and resolute opposition”,  the Chinese vice Foreign Minister said.

Last week, the United States (US) decried the “unjustified use of force” in Hong Kong, calling on Beijing to protect freedom there, according to a senior official in US President Donald Trump’s administration.

“We condemn the unjustified use of force and urge all parties to refrain from violence and engage in a constructive dialogue, ” the official said. “As the president has said, the US expects Beijing to honor its commitments under the Sino-British Joint Declaration and to protect freedom, the judicial system and the democratic way of life in Hong Kong.”
