Cairokee band legal adviser, Mohamed Kamal El Din Saleh, expressed their displeasure with the exploitation of their songs by some television and YouTube channels without their consent as the owner of the songs' intellectual property rights.

In a statement, he stressed that releasing the band songs on the internet, especially their latest album "Noaata Beda" (White Point) and “The Ugly Ducklings”, does not mean that these songs are not subject to intellectual property laws.

They are registered by the competent authorities and are approved by the censorship authority, and therefore, exploiting them in that way harms the band and affects it negatively, both financially and artistically.

“The songs are the band’s only source of income by streaming them on their own channels over the Internet,” Mohamed pointed out.

The Legal adviser pointed out that he will take the necessary judicial procedure to prosecute all the channels that encroached on the band’s intellectual property rights and their YouTube channel, especially those channels that broadcast illegally on the satellite — such as Elsharq and Mekameleen — and other television and YouTube channels that play parts from their songs and change its meaning to serve a specific political objective and purpose, without regard to its original values and artistic goals.

Elsharq and Mekameleen television channels are Muslim Brotherhood (MB) affiliated satellite channels based in Turkey.

Noteworthy، Cairokee is an Egyptian rock band that was officially launched in 2003.

It consists of lead vocalist Amir Eid، lead guitarist Sherif Hawary، drummer Tamer Hashem، keyboarder Sherif Mostafa، and bass guitarist Adam el-Alfy.

The initial band members were friends ever since they were young during their school days and Tamer was already a drummer back then.

They rose to prominence with its revolutionary music following the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 due to its politically-inspired lyrics and protest songs released following the uprising.

Their title song "Ya El Midan"، featuring notable Egyptian singer Aida el Ayoubi who had previously retired in the 1990's، ranked number one on Facebook worldwide for downloads and number eight on YouTube with more than half a million views on the video channel in just two days following its internet release.

In 2003، Eid and Hawary had already started an English band initially called Black Star. They started playing cover for English songs with only one Egyptian Masry song called "Ghariba" that was highly admired by their audiences.

The band later decided to continue making Egyptian songs because they felt it was shameful to keep playing English music, as it was not their mother tongue.

They were mainly influenced by the works of Pink Floyd and The Beatles and regard Pink Floyd's music as an inspiration for their own musical career.
