Cairo University has inked a protocol of cooperation with the Egyptian Space Agency (ESA) to produce qualified and efficient engineers and scientists. Management of the university launched a forum on the sidelines of signing the protocol of cooperation.

The two parties are going to coordinate in space research, technical applications, projects and exchange expertise.

Dr Mohamed Samy, Vice- President of Cairo for Society service Affairs and Environment Development, said that the ESA seeks to play an important role in the Egyptian education system via the educational satellite.

He added that Cairo University works to support the scientific cooperation between Faculties of Sciences, Engineering and Center of Studies and Space Sciences.

On his part, Dr Mohamed Al Qawsy, Chief Executive Officer ( CEO) of ESA pointed out that Egypt hasn’t any authorized space program so far.

He revealed that a strong space program needs cooperation of the Egyptian universities and research centers, affirming that the scientific spectrum work aims to maximize the national interest.

On the other hand, Eng. Ahmed Youssef, head of Antennas Department of Satellites at the SEA, revealed that Egypt Sat-1 was launched to the space on Apr. 17, 2007. It has still been in its orbit for 3.5 years and supplies Egypt with a number of space images.

He assured that the Egyptian space program started in 1998 by 28 engineers.

"Numbers of engineers increased to 232 in 2019," he said.  "Numerous technical projects were carried out such as compact communication system."

Also two mini satellites had been launched to the outer space so far. Another third satellite will be launched next year in cooperation with Japan.

Eng. Youssef further said that a satellite costs EGP 13 million.

Egypt cooperates with China to produce a new satellite named “Sat-2”.

Headquarters of the ESA covers 123 acres near the New Administrative Capital. Law establishing the ESA says it is a public national economic body and it follows the presidency. It enjoys the technical, financial and managerial independence.

The ESA aims to transfer sciences and technologies of space along with acquiring self- abilities to construct and launch satellites.
