Several Brazilian states such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro suspend using AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women on a recommendation by the national health authorities after recording the death of a pregnant woman of AstraZeneca, RT reported on Wednesday.

The case of halting the vaccine will remain until identifying the main cause of the reported death, Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said in a news conference.

Jorge Kalil, the consultant for the National Vaccination Program explained: "It is not clear that the vaccine caused this blood clot. We are analyzing the details of the whole case to reach a conclusion and clarify what happened."

Regarding pregnant women who already received the first dose of the vaccine, Franciele Francinato, the coordinator of the National Vaccination Program revealed that they need to wait until the issuing of the new measures.

On the other hand, the Rio de Janeiro health secretariat stated that new mothers will not be allowed to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine  "until the investigation of the case of an adverse event in a pregnant woman is completed by the Ministry of Health."
