US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on the 14th anniversary of the Russian forces’ entry into Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
“On this day 14 years ago, Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Georgia,” Blinken said, in a statement published on the US State Department’s official website.
“Russia must be held accountable for the commitments it made under the 2008 ceasefire – withdrawing its forces to pre-conflict positions and allowing unfettered access to the delivery of humanitarian aid,” the statement added.
“It must also rescind its recognition of Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This is necessary for hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons so that they can return to their homes in safety and dignity,” the statement read.
Moreover, Blinken affirmed the continued unwavering support of the people of Georgia in their quest to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity and to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
