US President Joe Biden announced his participation in the COP26 climate summit next month in Scotland.

In a tweet, the US ambassador to the UK, Philip Reeker, said: “It's official - President Biden will travel to Scotland for #COP26. The gathering in Glasgow will be a pivotal moment on the road towards a more secure, prosperous, and sustainable future for our planet.”

In a statement the White House confirmed that  Biden and the First Lady, Jill Biden, will visit Glasgow for COP26 on November 1 and 2.

It will also follow a trip to the Vatican on October 29 where the President will meet with Pope Francis, followed by a two day official visit to Rome for the G20 leader’s summit.

The White House also confirmed that Biden is likely to meet French President Emmanuel Macron while the two leaders are in Rome.

During the G20 summit in the Italian capital, an agreement will be reached on global minimum taxes, in addition to discussions  combating the COVID-19 pandemic and promoting global economic recovery.

As for Scotland, the commitment of the United States to invest and work to combat global warming will be of great importance to other countries, especially after former President Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris climate agreement.
