U.S. President Joe Biden announced a further $2.5 billion in emergency aid and medium to long-term food security assistance for resilient African food systems and supply markets.

This follows over $11 billion in US humanitarian and food security assistance for this year alone.

Biden also unveiled a new strategic partnership on food security between the US and the African Union (AU) to bring together the public and private sectors and international financial institutions and address food needs, the White House said in a statement.

Washington has already provided $11 billion in food assistance for the continent this year.

"The United States is all in on Africa and all in with Africa," Biden told nearly 50 African leaders who have spent three days in a wintry Washington that featured a gala White House dinner.

He added: "Africa belongs to the table in every room – every room for global challenges that are being discussed."

"We're facing a global food crisis, and nowhere is it felt more keenly than on the African continent," the American leader said. "Today, famine once more stalks the Horn of Africa. High food prices and high trade barriers are taking a toll on the lives and livelihoods of millions of people across the continent."
