Kiki Bertens defeated Simona Halep denying her a return to world No 1 as she defeated the two-time champion in the Madrid Open final to claim the biggest title of her career.

The 27-year-old became the first woman to win the title losing a single set in all her matches as she overcame Halep, who would have replaced Naomi Osaka at the top of the standings, 6-4 6-4.

Both players struggled to hold serve with eight breaks across the two sets - three to Halep and five to Bertens - but the Dutchwoman was  more dominant.

Halep is the fourth Grand Slam champion Bertens has beaten during the tournament and she will now be seen as one of the favourites for the French Open, which begins on 27 May.
