Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced that his club will not make a move for Paris St-Germain forward Neymar in January.

The La Liga giants spent all summer trying to negotiate a deal to re-sign the Brazilian, who moved to France for a world record £222m in 2017. However, the club was unable to agree on equal terms with Neymar.

Bartomeu, who was asked whether it was possible for Barcelona to sign the Brazilian in January, Bartomeu said:"No. Right now, no."

Neymar became the world's most expensive player in 2017 when PSG paid him 222m euros so he could fulfill the release clause he signed at Barcelona.

From the on, the Brazilian wonderkid scored 34 league goals in two seasons for the French champions, although injuries interrupted both of those championships

Bartomeu dismissed the suggestion that Neymar was the club's main target in the summer, adding that the possibility to sign him was a bonus.

Barcelona's top defender, on the other hand, had another opinion on the matter. Gerard Pique has suggested that the Neymar transfer quest at Barcelona may not be over, with the long-serving defender saying “you never know” when he was asked about the possibility of his club signing Neymar.

“I wish him the best. I spoke with him and I said I hope things go well for him this season and that you never know, each year brings a new opportunity, so we will see.” Pique stated to Cadena.
