BA to Discuss "History of Sports Medicine"

The BA Antiquities Museum, affiliated with the Cultural Outreach Sector, will organize a lecture entitled "History of Sports Medicine" on Tuesday, 10 September 2019, at 1:00 pm in the BACC Third Floor Floating Room (F3).

The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Mostafa Moniry, an Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Consultant.

It will deal with the origins of sports medicine in ancient times as ancient Egyptians were the first to practice medicine and sports, evidenced by their inscriptions on the ceilings of temples and tombs, as well as papyri records of their medical practices.

Even the Greeks considered the Egyptian Imhotep as the god of medicine, in spite of their faith in the Greek physician Hippocrates' capabilities.

With the emergence of the old Olympic Games, Galen, the first physician specialized in treating the gladiators, became more prominent.

While the Romans discontinued the old Olympic Games for several centuries, on the other hand, Muslim physicians continued to excel in this field of medicine, especially Avicenna who highlighted the role of sports in curing diseases, the importance of nutrition science and the vital functions of the human body.

With the renaissance and the re-establishment of the modern Olympic Games, sports medicine was not limited to the treatment or prevention of sports injuries, but it also played a major role in the treatment of many diseases.
