On Thursday, armed clashes erupted between security members of the Government of National Accord (GNA) in the capital Tripoli, according to Al-Arabiya TV.

Eyewitnesses said that the fighting sides have used heavy and medium weapons. The clash was between the General Security Force and the Deterrence Force, in the Andalus neighborhood in the center of Tripoli.

Sources noted that the clashes began after the General Security Forces refused to allow members of the Deterrence Force to enter some areas inside the capital without prior coordination.

Activists also confirmed that the clashes stopped at a later time after the withdrawal of the elements of the Deterrence Force from the positions of the the General Security Forces.

Libya fell into chaos after the 2011 civil war. The GNA controls the western side of the country as well as the capital Tripoli, while its chief rival of the Libyan National Army (LNA) manages the eastern region of the war-torn country.

The UN has repeatedly urged the conflicting sides in Libya to respect the agreed ceasefire signed in Geneva last October.
