Mulan is a Chinese legendary young woman described in The Ballad of Mulan written in the Northern Wei era. According to the poem, Mulan decided to substitute her old father and her younger brother in the army to defend against invaders attacking China.

As women were not supposed to be warriors, she masqueraded as a man, fighting for twelve years without being revealed. At the end, Mulan returned to her family, after she refused to get any reward.

The story has inspired a number of screen adaptations in China and USA. In 1998, Disney produced the animated musical adventure film Mulan.

It was well-received by critics and public, grossed over $304 million, earned a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination and won several Annie Awards including Best Animated Feature.

Again in 2004, Disney produced Mulan II, a direct-to-video animated musical film, which is a sequel to the 1998 film. But it was poorly received by critics.

This year, and for the third time, Walt Disney Pictures releases a new movie based on the Mulan legend. It is a live-action Mulan remake of the 1998 animated film, although it has some obvious changes. one of them involves her family.

The Mulan's remake budget exceeded $300 million. it is directed by Niki Caro, the second woman at Disney Studios to direct a movie budgeted over $100 million. Liu Yifei, the Chinese- American actress will portray the role of Mulan.

The movie is scheduled to be released in the UK and USA on the 27th of March 2020.
