International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is observed every year on April 6.

The day highlights the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and people’s lives across the globe.

It also aims at empowering women and girls, young people, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups, tackling racism, and enhancing health, sustainability, and education objectives in society.

According to the United Nations (U.N.), sport offers tremendous potential for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for promoting peace and human rights.

The theme of this year is "Scoring for People and the Planet.”

To mark the day, a number of Davos-style conversations, highlighting the power of football and other sports in advancing the SDGs and human rights will be held Thursday at UN Headquarters in New York. The discussion panels will focus on three main themes: sustainability and climate action, gender equality, and the fight against racism and hate speech.

The IDSDP was first founded on August 23, 2013, by the UN General Assembly.
