A major Apple supplier "Quanta" said on Wednesday that it was under a cyberattack and was trying to recover data after one of the world's biggest scammers said it was trying to blackmail the two companies.

The company, which makes computers for Apple and supplies companies like Cisco, Microsoft and Siemens said it has been subjected to cyberattacks on a small number of Quanta's servers and is "conducting an investigation to ensure the data is contained and recovered".

The recognition came after one of the most criminal hacking groups "REvil" said on its dark web that it had hacked Quanta and is now blackmailing Apple.

REvil usually withholds its victims' data or computer systems until ransoms are paid. In this case, the group said Quanta refused to cooperate with its demands and is now asking Apple to pay a ransom by May 1 in exchange for not leaking its data.

"Our team is negotiating the sale of large quantities of confidential graphics and gigabytes of personal data with several major brands," REvil added.

The criminal hacking company also shared copies of Apple's product blueprints, though it is unclear if they contained any confidential data.

Records seen by the Financial Times showed that REvil initially requested $50 million in ransomware from Quanta.
