US Congress is on the verge of passing a gun violence reduction law after the Senate approved the bill on Thursday, which seemed far-fetched a month ago, and when it does.

This bill will be the most comprehensive response of lawmakers in decades to the shootings, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The House of Representatives was due to vote on the $13 billion package Friday, a month after the murders of 19 students and two teachers at Uvalde Elementary School in Texas. Days before this incident, a white man killed 10 black shoppers in Buffalo, New York, out of racism.

The two incidents, separated by a few days and whose victims were helpless and sympathetic to the public, prompted both parties to conclude that Congress must act, especially in a year that is scheduled to witness midterm elections.

After weeks of talks behind closed doors, bipartisan negotiators in the Senate have presented a settlement that takes modest but impactful steps to make this mess less likely.
