On Saturday, archaeologists unearthed a ceremonial chariot during excavation works around the wall of ancient Pompeii, Italy.

Part of the carriage, Pompeill, Italy

The excavation took place in a Roman villa located nearby the outside walls of the ancient city.

Made of wood and iron, the four wheeled vehicle was designed with decorations in bronze and tin.

The chariot was well preserved under the dust after the city was buried by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79.

The Italian Culture ministry described the discovery as "a unique find, without any precedent in Italy".

In the same context, Massimo Osanna, Director of the Pompeii archaeological site said the carriage was used for "festive moments for the community - parades and processions".

"This is an extraordinary discovery that advances our understanding of the ancient world," she added.

People in Pompeii had various forms of carriages for transportation, and work alongside this ceremonial one.

Last year, several breathtaking discoveries were announced in Pompeii such as unveiling the skeletons of a man and his servant in addition to an ancient eatery.
