The German Trade Union "Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft" Verdi has called on employees of the Amazon Logistics Center to strike before Christmas to demand better conditions and salaries.

Since 2013, unions have held frequent strikes in Germany, which is the second largest market for the Amazon after the United States, in the hope of imposing recognition of the agreements that apply to other retail employees.

The union said in a statement on Sunday that employees should use the busy days before Christmas to increase pressure to raise wages, adding that the holiday's bonuses should quadrupled to 1,600 euros from their current level of 400 euros.

Strike leader Mechthild Middeke added that employees are coming under pressure, doing overtime, and this should be recognized with a higher Christmas bonus.

The strike is expected to start on Monday and continue until Saturday at a logistics center in Bad Hersfeld.

Amazon previously commented that strikes levels are low, and doesn't experience any operational impact.

Last July, Amazon announced plans to open a new site, bringing the total number of staff in Germany to 20,000 in 35 warehouses.

"For people at the logistics center, Amazon is undoubtedly one of the best employers," an Amazon spokesman said in a statement, adding that all packages would arrive on time because most employees would continue to work on demand.
