Tourism Minister Dr. Rania Al-Mashat said that opening the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) would pay more attention to cultural tourism not in Egypt only, but also all over the world.

Al-Mashat's remarks came during her interview with Editor-in-Chief of Travel Weekly Magazine Arnie Weissmann on the sidelines of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) summit, held earlier in April in Spain.

"Cultural tourism globally sometimes takes a backseat when it's compared to sun and sea tourism. In Egypt, we are lucky that many cities are opening museums to keep up with the tradition," Al-Mashat noted.

The minister pointed out that GEM – with a one billion dollar investment – is the biggest museum in the world allocated to one civilization. The museum will display the full collection of King Tutankhamun reaching 5,000 pieces.

“This is the only museum that has the pyramids as its backdrop, so you can take a selfie with Tutankhamun and the pyramids outside,” she added.

Also, the statue of King Ramses II will receive the visitors at the museum's entrance.

GEM's artifacts represent the greatness of the ancient Egyptian civilization but its design shows modernity and contemporary and that's the Egyptian tourism's message to the world.

At the end of the interview, Weissmann said: "I can't wait to visit GEM," stressing every visitor to Egypt feels such feeling.

Al-Mashat, on her part, welcomed him and all visitors to tour GEM.

It is worth mentioning that during the WTTC summit, the minister received the WTTC Global Champion Award in appreciation for her efforts in developing the Egyptian tourism sector which positioned Egypt to a better level.
