The House of Representatives (HoR) plenary session kicked off on Thursday, headed by Parliament speaker Hanafi Gebaly.

At the outset of the session, Gebaly announced the appointment of chancellor Ahmed Manaa as the parliament secretary-general, replacing Mahmoud Fawzi who submitted his resignation yesterday.

"We wish him success to promote the General Secretariat of the HoR technically and administratively," Parliament speaker said.

Notably, MPs gathered in a plenary session on Tuesday to elect a speaker and two deputies. Supported by the majority Mostaqbal Watan (Future of the Homeland) Party, Hanafi Ali Gibali, a former chairman of the Supreme Constitutional Court (2018-19), won the post to become the 51st speaker of parliament.

Ali Abdel-Aal, speaker of the 2015-20 parliament, did not stand for re-election.

Prominent businessman Mohamed Aboul Enein and parliament’s former secretary-general Ahmed Saadeddin were elected deputy speakers.
