Aboul Gheit Congratulates Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed his sincere congratulations to the elected Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on his election as the president of Somali, wishing him success in achieving the aspirations of the Somali people of peace, stability and prosperity.

Aboul Gheit expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo in running the country during his tenure and the spirit of democracy he showed in accepting the election result.

An official source in the General Secretariat confirmed that the Arab League will continue its support for Somalia in its development process and its unremitting efforts to achieve national reconciliation and rebuild its institutions.

Noteworthy, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was sworn in on Monday as the president of Somali after winning the presidential elections, becoming the tenth president in the country’s history.

According to Russia Today, Sheikh Mahmoud, 67, who served as Somalia’s president between 2012 and 2017,was sworn in at a military base at Mogadishu International Airport, amid strict security measures.

After the vote counting process was completed, Speaker of the House of the People (Lower House), Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur Madobe,announced that Sheikh Mahmoud had obtained 214 votes, compared to 110 votes for his rival, outgoing president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
