Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of Higher Education and the official who shoulders the responsibilities of the Minister of Health, said that the whole world is seeing an increase in COVID-19 infections, including Egypt.

Abdel Ghaffar added that Omicron is emerging four or five times more than the other variants.

The minister revealed that Egypt is also witnessing a rise in Omicron variant infections, and it overcame delta as the dominant variant in the country.

Regarding the symptoms of Omicron, they are similar to flu such as headache, sore throat, fever, cough, stuffy nose, and body aches, and the same treatment protocols are applied to it.

In the same context, Abdel Ghaffar added that the vaccines assist in reducing the risks of dangerous symptoms but do not prevent infection, asserting that unvaccinated persons may have high percentage of suffering from severe symptoms.

It's worthy to mention that Egypt’s Health Ministry reported 1079 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total up to 397778.

The total number of COVID-19-related deaths has now reached 22097 nationwide after the ministry announced 34 deaths.

About 893 patients were discharged from quarantine at isolation hospitals, raising the total number of fully recovered cases to 331607.

In the same context, Dr. Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, the Presidential Advisor for Health Affairs, said that there are close similarities between flu and Coronavirus symptoms such as the loss of taste and smell; however, both should not be treated as the same.
