There is no denying that white refined sugar is unhealthy and not only because it is fattening and high in calories. Actually, studies have shown that white refined sugar can cause much more health damage than weight gain. So, here are 5 reasons why white refined sugar is harmful for your health:

1- It causes insulin resistance

Having an increased amount of white sugar on a daily basis leads to having chronic high sugar levels in the blood which requires chronic high levels of insulin that eventually lead the body to become insulin resistance.

Becoming insulin resistance is a precursor to type 2 diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

2- It suppresses the immune system

Consuming a high sugar intake reduces the body’s ability to fight infections and diseases. Not to mention it also consumes the body’s nutrients that are essential for a healthy immune system.

   3- It weakens the kidneys

Having high sugar levels in the blood in one of the main reasons for weakened kidneys function seeing as the sugar damages the microvascular vessels in the kidneys which decreases their ability to regulate the excretion of harmful wastes, salts and minerals.

   4- It causes tooth decay

Consuming a lot of white sugar whether it is in the form of desert, soda or candy works on feeding and enabling the cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth which in return causes tooth decay and in some cases tooth loss.

   5- It reduces children’s IQ

There have been studies that showed evidence that having a high sugar intake in early childhood can lead to the reduction of the IQ levels of the children. But on the other side having a high intake of foods rich in nutrients can lead to increased IQ levels in children.
