Four people were killed and at least 21 others were injured in a fire that broke out at a retirement home in Bedburg-Hau in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia early Monday, the German news agency DPA reported.
A firefighter and a police officer were also injured and taken to hospital, police said. In addition to those confirmed to be injured, 46 other residents were evacuated and are being examined over possible injuries.
The police added in their statement that the fire that broke out during the night had been extinguished, but firefighters are still working at the scene, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
