The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards took place on Sunday, looking a little different than usual amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of taking place at a packed Barclays Center, artists took the stage in audience-less locations around New York City, while adhering to social distancing guidelines. “Hustlers” star Keke Palmer served as host.

Those performers included BTS, The Black Eyed Peas, DaBaby, The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Maluma with Latin American boy band CNCO, and Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande.

Opening the annual ceremony, Palmer stated that the show was dedicated to Chadwick Boseman, who died Friday at the age of 43 after privately battling colon cancer for four years.

Palmer described Boseman as “an actor whose talent and passion is a true inspiration to all the fans he touched, and everyone he encountered.”

The VMAs also recognized essential workers at the frontlines of the outbreak and handed out trophies to Grande, Justin Bieber, and CNCO for music recorded during coronavirus lockdowns.

Gaga cleaned house at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, in which she won five honors, most of them for her No. 1 hit with Grande, “Rain on Me,” which they performed live for the first time along with a number of background dancers, all wearing masks.

She also accepted awards like artist of the year, song of the year, and the MTV Tricon award.

Gaga prioritized style and safety at the VMAs, stepping out in nine high-fashion face masks throughout the show.

“Wear a mask. It’s a sign of respect,” Gaga said during one of her several appearances onstage

She also called for Justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.

Meanwhile, The Weeknd took home the biggest prize of the night, "video of the year" for “Blinding Lights,” which he performed in the opening.

The pop star also tackled important messages to viewers about the current state of the world: “Wear a mask” and “Justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.”

Other big winners included BTS “best pop, best K-pop, best group and best choreography”, Taylor Swift “best direction”, Doja Cat “best new artist”, Megan Thee Stallion “best hip-hop”, and Blackpink “song of the summer”.

The unusual circumstances had also inspired two new quarantine-specific categories: best music video from home, which went to Grande and Bieber for “Stuck With U,” and best quarantine performance, which was given to CNCO. See the list of all the Winners.
