Sharm El Sheikh International Airport received on Thursday the first UK flight since 2015, the first of its kind after the UK lift the ban on the Red Sea resort city in October.

The first flight, carrying about 168 British tourists, took off from Birmingham Airport (BHX) and touched down in Sharm El Sheikh afternoon.

Civil Aviation Minister Younes Al-Masry and officials of the Tourism Ministry warmly welcomed the British group at the airport in a celebration organized by the Egyptian Airports Company.

Flights will directly resume to Sharm El Sheikh once a week until March 2020.

Red Sea Holidays is the first tour operator to return, with charters initially from Birmingham, Manchester, and Gatwick to the Red Sea popular city, according to the Independent

Moreover, EasyJet Holidays announced that it would launch trips to the city for the first time in 2020. In addition, TUI detailed its planned flights to the resort, set to begin in February in 2020, taking into account customer demand.

It is worth mentioning that Sharm El Sheikh International Airport recently received the renewal of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification for safety and quality standards.

Earlier this month, the airport topped the list of fastest-growing major airports in Africa by capacity, according to a new study by Routesonline.

The UK announced a flight ban on the city after a Russian passenger plane crashed in Sinai in October 2015.
