A video of a wedding of a 12-year-old couple went viral yesterday, Wednesday, on social media. The incident aroused a status of satire and rejection due to the couple’s age.

The video showed a 12-year-old girl with her 12-year-old husband-to-be during a family pre-wedding celebration in Ain Shams district in Cairo.

The manager of Child helpline Sabri Othman supervised by the Egyptian National Council of Childhood and Motherhood expressed in a phone interview with the state-run Al Oula channel, “We accidentally knew the incident after it went viral on social media. The lady who responsible for helping the 12-year old girl in dress and makeup posted a video of the wedding as a kind of promotion.”

He added, “The children’s marriage is a phenomenon especially in this district from Cairo.”

The lady has been arrested and the young couple is now under the legal custody of the council.

In the same context, Cairo Security Directorate announced that the investigation is ongoing to check the full details of the incident before following the legal procedures.Thanks to Social Media, 12-Year-Kids Marriage Foiled

According to the official statement issued by the council, the marriage has been stopped and representatives from the council met the couple's families to make sure that the marriage will be suspended till the couple turned 16, the legal age of marriage.

Sahar Sonbatti, the head of the council, urged the Egyptian people to inform the officials regarding such incidents for saving Egyptian children's childhood.
