What Sisi , Trump Tackled in Their Talks at Oval Office?

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi tackled bilateral and regional issues on Tuesday summit talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington D.C.

Both leaders briefed the media after concluding their talks at the Oval Office.

The U.S. President stressed the American administration's commitment to reinvigorating frameworks of cooperation between the two countries.

“It’s a great honor to be with President El-Sisi, a friend—a great friend—of Egypt. And we have very special things happening. Our relationship has never been stronger. And we’re working with Egypt on many different fronts, including military and trade,” Trump said.

Strategic and Economic Partnership

He also confirmed the administration's keenness on strengthening the ongoing coordination and strategic consultations between Egypt and the U.S. and on further advancing them in the coming period, given Egypt's pivotal role in the Middle East as a cornerstone for preserving peace and security for all peoples in the region.

On his part, Sisi thanked Trump for inviting him to visit Washington D.C., confirming that Egypt values its strategic relations with the U.S., which is based on mutual respect and fruitful cooperation for the benefit of the Egyptian and American peoples.

Sisi asserted that strengthening cooperation and coordination between the two countries in the coming period shall realize their common interests and contribute to supporting efforts exerted to reinforce security and stability in the Middle East, according to a press release issued by the Egyptian Presidency late Tuesday.

Also, the two Presidents discussed ways to boost investments of American companies in Egypt. The U.S. president highlighted his country's interest to increase trade between the two countries and boost joint investments.

US Support to Egypt in its War Against Terrorism

The meeting also tackled the fight against terrorism as President Trump commended Egypt's successful efforts to vigorously and courageously counter terrorism which threatens stability in the Middle East and the world.

The American President reiterated that Egypt is a key partner in the war on terrorism and expressed his country's full support for Egypt's efforts in this regard.

Moreover, Trump was keen on conveying the U.S. and all its institutions' gratitude to Sisi for his efforts in the area of religious tolerance and freedom of worship in Egypt.

Regional Issues

During their summit talks, Sisi and Trump exchanged views on all regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Sisi affirmed that the situation in the Middle East requires profound understanding of the fact that the weakness of national state institutions only serves the spread of terrorism and the expansion of its threat.

Furthermore, the Egyptian president underscored the importance of reaching a just and permanent solution to the Palestinian issue, so as to achieve peace based on the resolutions of international legitimacy and the establishment of a Palestinian State along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The summit meeting also discussed the issue of the Renaissance Dam. Sisi tackled the negotiations underway between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.

He confirmed the importance of reaching consensus on the method of filling and operating the dam in a way that shall preserve the water rights of the Egyptian people, respect the rules of international law and achieve the interests of the three countries.
