Ramses Square.. Main Gate to Cairo

“Bab El-Hadid, El-Nahda Square, Ramses Square” were the names for one of the widest and most crowded squares in Cairo which linking many main streets.

The square is named after the Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II whose statue used to stand in the middle of the square, but the statue was removed from the square on 25th of August 2006 to the Grand Egyptian Museum.

However being the most crowded places in Cairo, it still a famous destination to all Cairo visitors and tourists as it offers them a visit to the “National Railway Museum” which is located at the eastern side of Ramses square.

Before Ramses Square was built, the place used to be a village where Arab conquerors settled during Mohammed Ali’s era.

The Square became a public park when King Farouk reigned Egypt and he changed the name of the street to his mother’s name “Queen Nazli”.

Ramses Square was also known as “Bab El-Hadid” in ancient times when Saleh el-Din, ruler of Egypt built a great gate “Bab El-Hadid” or ” the Iron Gate” in 12th century which remained standing until 1847, when it was demolished to make way for the new railway station.
