The declaration of independence was signed on July 4th 1776 by only 2 men while 56 men from 13 colonies signed it on August 2nd. The nation's holiday only became official 100 years later after the declaration.

 

Here are some interesting facts you might never knew before:

 

-John Adams and the 33-year-old Thomas Jefferson are the only two signers who became president of the states. Both presidents died on July4,1826 (the nation's 50th birthday).

 

-Adams wanted the celebration to be on the second of July and refused to attend any celebration on July 4th .

 

-President Calvin Coolidge is the only president born on the fourth of July. First daughter of former president Barrack Obama, Malia Obama was also born on that day.

 

-If you ever wondered what the American national flag stands for, here is the answer; the 13 stripes alternate by white and red stands for the 13 original states who formed the federal union while the 50 stars stand for the 50 states that were later added to the union. The stars on the original flag used to be in a circle shape to show equality of all states. 87% of the flags are imported from china.

 

-The first celebration took place in Philadelphia by firing 13 fireworks in addition to firing a cannon 13 times for each state. Since then fireworks became very important tradition to celebrate the day. According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, people there spend nearly 1$billion on fireworks.

 

-when the declaration was first signed, only about 2.5 million people were living in the states, however the number increased to 311.7 million in 2011.

 

-America is not the only country celebrating on July 4th , Philippines gained its independence from US on the same day.

 

-Americans spend $92 million on chips,$341.4 million  on beer, and they consume nearly 155 hotdogs on that day.
