Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary-general, died on Saturday at the age of 80 in Switzerland.

He was born on Friday - so his name means. In the "Akan" names tradition, some children are named according to the day of the week on which they were born.

After his demise was announced, many leaders from different countries offered condolences over his death, considering him as one of the most successful Secretary-General of the United Nations in history. He was described by the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Richard Holbrooke as a great UN Chief.

In the distant past, he was received by his tribe (Ashanti) in Ghana as a child surrounded by a halo of reverence and sanctification because he was the twin of his sister who later died. In the Ghanaian culture twins are hold in considerable sanctity and respect.

He was nicknamed heir to gold families whom he lived with during his childhood among the tribes of "Ashanti" (his father's tribe) and "Al-Fanti" (his mother's tribe)

The Ashanti were famous for their gold trade and the "Al-Fanti" were intermediaries in the gold trade between Ashanti and the British government

The first black UN secretary-general learned diplomacy and inspiring life lessons from his grandfathers who were tribes' leaders.

Despite his rich origin, one of his most famous quotes was "suffering anywhere concerns people everywhere."The quote was a guide and address for his entire political future.

Annan used to lead strikes at school if he finds out one of his colleagues is being discriminated or maltreated. He used to stand up for people's rights; he was even known for his courage.

The Ghanaian people named him "The Father" and considered him a hero. He was named also named "Busumuru" by Ghana's Ashanti which means a man who deserves trust and esteem.

He gained popularity during his first and second as the United Nation chief.

His first term as Secretary-General began in January, 1997 after Boutros Boutros-Ghali's one term in office. His second term started in January 2002 and continued until 2006.

From the "Global Compact", "Call to Action" to "a greater message" many people around the world became familiar with the mentality and humanity of this great character.

He launched the" Global Compact" in 1999, the world's largest initiative to promote corporate social responsibility and is known as the UN Global Compact.

Annan considered the HIV epidemic, known as his "personal priority", and in April 2001 issued a "Call for Action" and secured the World Development Fund for Development and Livestock

In September 2001, he played a crucial role in motivating the General Assembly and the Security Council to take action against terrorism.

In 2005, with a recommendation entitled "Greater Freedom" to the United Nations General Assembly, Annan urged the Assembly to impose the philosophy of intervention. The United Nations is above the sovereignty of states when necessary to protect civilians from wars and massacres.

As a result, both Annan and the United Nations received the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for their work to make the world more orderly and peaceful.
