A group of young aspiring students who study Engineering at Ain Shams University decided to counter their society’s problems in their own way. They preferred to react positively instead of complaining.

They decided to join "‘enactus’ Converts Shrimp Peel to Organic Fertilizer", a non-profit international organization with centres in 36 countries around the world and works in community development.

Mohannad Ahmed, one of the aspiring youth, said that his team includes more than 2,000 students from the university, and a number of his colleagues chose to conduct the project this year, 2018, in the village of 'Ali Attiya' and 'Shakshuk' in Alfayoum.

With the help of local officials in Sanoras city center, “We learned that the village was mainly depending on agriculture, but 70% of its citizens currently live below the poverty line, with an average income of 500 EGP which is 15% of the average income in Egypt,” he added.

Ahmad explained that there was an opportunity in huge wasted resources; the litter or shrimp peel which were in large quantities. “We found that some villages there are working in peeling shrimp; they receive more than half a ton a day, peel them and throw away the crust,” he explained. After analysis, the team found that this could be converted into organic fertilizer.
