Al-Afghani statue unveiled at Cairo's Freedom Park

CAIRO, AUG 10 (SEE) The Ambassador of Afghanistan in Cairo Fazlurrahman Fazil unveiled on Monday the statue of Jamal al-Din al-Afghani at the Freedom Park in Cairo.

Fazil said that the event coincides with the 150th anniversary of Jamal al Din's first visit to Egypt and the 180th anniversary of his birth.

The park - along with rare plants and trees - contains statues of Egyptian symbols such as the "Prince of Poets" Ahmed Shawqi, the "Poet of the Nile" Hafez Ibrahim, the great economist Talaat Harb and the martyr Abdel Moneim Riad.

It includes statues of Latin American leaders such as Chilean independence leader Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme, Cuban National Hero José Julián Martí Pérez, Peruvian caudillo Ramón Castilla and José Ecuador President Eloy Alfaro, as well as the Egyptian-Armenian statue of friendship.

Khepe Ismail who was fond of parks ordered its establishment in 1876 to include statues of celebrities and leaders from Egypt and abroad.

The park was developed into a museum of symbols to strengthen the principle of friendship among nations.
