Aerospace Engineering Students Finished First at Intl. ‘AIAA Design Build Fly

CAIRO, Nov. 28 (SEE) - A team of Aerospace Engineering students at Cairo University won first place and the first stage of ‘AIAA Design Build Fly’, a radio-controlled aircraft competition sponsored by the American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Cessna Aircraft Company, and Raytheon Missile Systems. The competition’s final stage is set to take place at Arizona State in mid April 2019.

The first stage of the competition had 140 teams participated from 140 universities from around the world. 113 among them passed, where the ranking was set according to evaluating the proposal presented by each team.

The Egyptian team consisted of 11 students from different studying levels at Aerospace Department, at Faculty of Engineering: Mohamed Hisham, Amr Saber, Ahmed Hisham, Ahmed Yehia, Iman Nabil, Rawan Ismaiil, Mohamed Ashraf, Fatehy Hassan, Mohamed Hosny, Mustafa Osama and Ahmed El-Shafei.

The team was supervised by Dr. Osama Saied, head of the science association at the department, and assisted by Engineers Mohaned Draz, Assistant Teacher, and Mohamed Heta, post-graduate student at the department.

President of Cairo University Dr. Mohamed Othman El-Khosht hailed the team, and noted to the excellent capacity of Egyptian students to participate at local but also international competitions on innovation.

“The university encourages all students to take part in such competitions, and is keen to facilitate students’ innovation, but also connecting them with their counterparts abroad,” he said.

Dr. El-Khosht expressed all possible support for students at innovation and entrepreneurship as well as taking part in contests about finding solutions for certain issues.

For his part, Dr. Sayyed Tag El-Din, dean of faculty of Engineering, said that this participation of Egyptian students is not the first one at this field, but students in 2016 have taken part and made good results. He hailed the team and its supervisors.
